Clear your diary on Sunday 2 June 2013 because Brisbane City Council’s Green Heart Fair is on again - at 7th Brigade Park, Murphy Road - Chermside.

The Green Heart Fair is Brisbane’s premier sustainability event attracting 15,000 Brisbane residents interested in green living. Over 40 of our leading sustainability organisations will be sharing information and knowledge on how to live more sustainably and offering vital tips to reduce the rising costs of living. There will be plenty of activities and entertainment throughout the day – all for FREE.

Brisbane City Council will also be running activities in its marquee with Council’s experts offering green living and gardening tips, green waste and recycling advice, information on the new CityCycle initiative and bike paths, transport options and so much more.

The Fair is an initiative of Brisbane City Council as it works towards its goal of becoming Australia's most sustainable city.

• Over 40 sustainability exhibits including gardening advice with Annette McFarlane who will be introducing readers to the fundamental principles of organic gardening. 
• Cooking demonstrations with first Masterchef winner Julie Goodwin and all day craft and produce markets.
• Sporting clinics with Queensland Reds team members
• All day entertainment including local band the Cheap Fakes
• Kid’s Hub with jumping castle, rock climbing wall, face painting and performances from Dirtgirl
• And so much more!

NW District Swimming Information

First Day of School

Despite major weather events over the long weekend, Tuesday 29 February is the planned first day of school. As of Monday afternoon we had power and water. Some water damage has occured to non-teaching spaces, but all rooms should be usable. Students are welcome into classrooms from 8:50am.

The oval has been damaged and with some branches having been torn from trees it will be out of bounds until further notice.

The 2012 prep parents have organised a 'Tears and Cheers' morning tea that is underway from 9:00. All are welcome, especially prep parents. You don't have to bring baking along to join in, but those yummies are most appreciated. You'll find all the refreshments just outside the tuckshop.

 The bus safety survey

Oakleigh’s principal, deputy and the P&C are canvassing your opinion, through a survey. Your link for the online version of the survey will be emailed to your family on November 28. Or, if you receive a paper copy of the school’s newsletter please pick up a hard copy of the survey at the school office.  Replies are due by 5pm Monday December 10.

Why do we need to write a strategy?

The issue of our children’s safety on buses was raised at a recent P&C meeting. Some parents were concerned at the lack of seat belts on some bus trips. It was decided to ask the whole school community for their views on seat belts, as a change in practice will have financial consequences for Oakleigh families. This has become a good opportunity to review and then formalise our existing strategies and procedures.

What will they cover?

Oakleigh already has policies relating to child safety, and we support the use of public transport and chartered buses as an ecologically responsible option for school-related travel. What is needed now is to explain how we will put those policies into action when it comes to children travelling on buses.  

 The bus safety strategy will outline what the school will do to help keep bus travel safe, in relation to :

• Bus design and the kinds of buses chartered
• Other safety measures relating to the way we use buses, that minimise the risk to all passengers
• Education and awareness of parents, children and staff.

Guidelines will be written to provide information to help staff charter a safe bus.

Draft Responsible Behaviour Plan

Three years ago we produced our Responsible Behaviour Plan (RBP). It is now time to review the plan to ensure its relevance in this day and age. Staff have taken a close look at the plan, and have revised it in keeping with the template supplied by Education Queensland's Metropolitan Region.

Year 7 students have worked tirelessly this year to help children in need across the world. Here they are donating a huge batch of books to schools in Papua New Guinea.

Girls Soccer Team

 Just one of our terrfic interschool sport teams who venture into the surrounding suburbs each Friday to play against our local schools.  It is great to see the positive feedback from these games as students experience a range of sports and represent Oakleigh with pride and determination. As the motto states, "Deeds not Words".
