Our students are engaged in a range of leadership opportunities throughout their time at Oakleigh. The formal leadership process begins in term 4 of year 5 and is springboarded by the year 5 camp focus on building leadership, problem solving and team work skills.
Students are then required to complete an aspiring leader's booklet which outlines the process to become an Accredited Student Leader, or to apply for one of our badged positions below:
- School captain
- House captain
- Band, Strings, Choir, Prep, YCDI, STEAM, Arts and Library captains
Our school captains attend the annual Deputy Principal's Leadership Camp and tour at Government House and run many special assemblies and events in our school.
Student Representative Council (SRC)
The SRC has representatives from all other classes from Year 3 to Year 6. Their role is to organise the community fundraising focus each term, assist with a range of events and often assist the school leadership team with key endeavours. Their focus for fundraising is kids helping kids.
Houses
Each student is placed in one of our three sporting houses:
- Poinsettia - Red
- Jacaranda - Purple
- Wattle – Yellow
Each year we hold junior and senior cross country, athletics carnivals and swimming carnivals. Our focus is to build confidence to 'have a go' and enjoyment in sport in these early years.
Buddies
Our Seniors and Preps 'Buddy Up' for a range of events during the year. They meet several times a term to work together on classroom activities and foster relationships throughout the school. They are integral to the running of a number of learning activities, assist with Buddy reading, and they are great supports at all of our sporting carnivals.
Our seniors enjoy the buddy program as much as our newest school members and we value the responsibility and respectful relationships it fosters.
